The positive impact of the school library

School libraries increase children’s enjoyment of reading. But they also play a vital role in developing their research skills and their ability to learn. A recent OFSTED survey confirmed this positive impact.

And as school leaders are now required to evaluate their library facilities before inspections, it’s vital for schools to make the most of this valuable resource.

"The best school libraries have a positive impact on pupils' learning. Good headteachers understand this and resource the library appropriately.”
OFSTED Survey, 2005

“School libraries can have a positive impact on academic achievement, particularly at the primary and early secondary levels.”
Department of Further Education and Skills, 2001

“An effective school library service is essential to the achievement of the educational programme of the school.”
UNESCO

“A love of reading is more important for a child’s educational success than their family’s wealth or class.”
Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development research, 2001

“A successful school library is the heart of a school learning community.”
The Secretary of State for Education and Skills, 2004
